Walking Wounded

My good friend, Carol, who lives in the semi-woods, was naturally distressed when her cat, Buster, came home with a small infected hole in his hide. Everyone in the neighborhood had an opinion about whether coyotes (a recent problem) or a hawk could do such damage. Maybe another cat? Buster was feisty and known to engage other cats in territory battles. Buster is NO angel! An even worse possibility was that a human being shot him with buckshot or a BB. It did look like a shot wound. "Who would do such a thing!" she wailed, trying to figure out whose fault this was then she finally took Buster to the vet, who was not at all curious about what caused the damage to Buster, but VERY interested in fixing Buster's wound. When pushed for an explanation, he said, "You'd be surprised how many cats have shot in them and we don't know it until we Xray them for something else." In that way, we're just like cats. We're all walking around with emotional buckshot in us and if it flares up and causes trouble, very often we spend a lot of time trying to figure out "why" and "how it got there" instead of trying to just fix the damage and move on to a healthy and happy life.

Today: If you're traveling for the holidays and you set off a metal detector in the airport, it's probably just buckshot you've learned to shrug off--congratulations! AND: wear a belt a notch too tight to remind yourself: Don't eat too much turkey! Happy Thanksgiving and Namaste!
